Trend Spotting… front doors!

They say you can never make a second first impression. And it is very true! Apparently, most people decide if they like you or not within the first 6 seconds of meeting you. Just like it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks, its hard to then change this impression.

Your front door is the first impression of your home! And your home should express who you truly are! I always prefer to meet clients in their own home; small details tell you so much about a person, and I find it really gives me an insight into what they hold dear to their hearts and where their priorities lay.

You don’t get much closer to a first impression than your front door. So why not make it amazing?

Today I love… black taps

Recently I’ve been working on a project for a very famous celebrity chef (no name dropping here), and due to his incredibly busy schedule, I haven’t had a chance to meet with him and his wife to discuss ideas of what they envisage. Which is a blessing and a curse; on the one hand I get to suggest my own ideas and visions for the house without stepping on any toes, but on the other, they could hate it all and mistrust all my decisions for the remainder of the project. So I took option one, and designed what I thought would look amazing.

When presenting the drawings to my boss (who was going to a meeting with said celebrity and wife, in one of his London restaurants), he exclaimed ‘matte black taps?! Are we going back in time here?!’.

The answer to that is no. Black brassware may have been popular around the 70’s, but like many things,  they have been subject to a ‘revival’ movement that have brought them slap bang into the industrial era we are living in. And its not just black matte! Bronze, gold, rose gold, brushed brass, even neon pink! Leave the chrome taps in your memory and open your eyes to the world of finishes. With big brands like Hans Grohe offering the majority of their products in a wide variety of finishes (they will even make your tap in a RGB colour that you give them; how crazy is that?!). The world is your oyster!

Have you got a unique tap in your bathroom? Do you hate matte black too? I’d love to hear your thoughts – leave a comment!

Today I love… Perfect Palm Trees

Maybe its the sunshine going to my head, but I’m daydreaming about living a bohemian lifestyle even more than usual lately. Bedroom that opens onto the beach, linens and a surfboard propped in the corner, and beads in my hair. Don’t tell me you aren’t tempted too.

Palm tree cushions tick the subtle box in a simple scandinavian interior.

Cant help but think that this is a terrible waste of good surfboards, but it sure looks pretty.

Today I love… Geometry

Like most academic creatives (yes, that is a thing!) I do get alot of satisfaction out of sharp crisp lines and straight edges. And today I am really loving the use of geometry in a creative setting (because no one likes it in the maths setting). What do you love today??

Today I love…

… hexagonal tiles meeting wood flooring! I cant get enough of this – its so aesthetically pleasing and oddly satisfying. I dread the day that I send plans for this to my contractor. And a bit excited for it too!

Random Inspiration #1

Today I am dreaming of the open sea, embracing the elements and being truly free in the great outdoors. It makes me think of being calm and at peace. Nature is so inspiring; I try and incorporate some element of it in all of my designs.

Trend Spotting: Ironic Art on huge scales

I moved into a new flat a couple of months ago that is twice the size of my last one (thank you London crowding!) which isnt a bad thing. But now all my framed art looks really out of scale with the space, which is worsened by the double height living room (yes, I’m bragging a bit).

So I’ve been on the hunt for a whole new art collection. I know; poor me! I want something witty, that people look at and smile to themselves or suppress a snigger. I think this one may be a little too brash though…or is it?!
